Key Dates

Autumn 1
  • School reopens to students - Wednesday 4th September
  • Swimming begins for Mrs Lovegood's class - Friday 13th September
  • Parents evening - Monday 14th and Wednesday 16th October
  • Home Learning due on Monday 14th October
  • Home Learning Celebration Assembly on Tuesday 22nd October @ 9:00am (winners will be notified no later than Wednesday 16th October 2019) 
  • Spooky Disco - 24th October

Indoor PE will take place on a Monday for both classes.
Mrs Humphris' class will do outdoor PE on Friday.

This Half Term

Project - Elizabethans

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Explore who the Elizabethans were
  • Explore what the Spanish Armada was and why it was defeated
  • Discuss why portraits were important to this era
  • Explain the differences between rich and poor people of this time

Writing - The Devil and his Boy

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Write a biography
  • Improve our questioning, inference and prediction through reading and pictures
  • Explore what life was like for Elizabethan people through text and writing
  • Improve our vocabulary through exposure to rich texts and sources 

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Read different types of biographies
  • Read The Devil and his Boy

Maths


This half term we will be learning to:
  • ​Count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1,000
  • Find 1,000 more or less than a given number
  • Count backwards through 0 to include negative numbers
  •  Recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number (1,000s, 100s, 10s and 1s)
  • Order and compare numbers beyond 1,000
  • Round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Use Times Tables Rockstars to practise times tables
  • Practise reading and writing numbers (including spelling the number words).
  • Practise solving problems linked to money and other real life applications of decimal numbers.

Science

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating
  • Recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear
  • Find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it
  • Find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it.
 

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Listen to some sounds and sort them from quietest to loudest 
  • Listen to some music and explore how sound is made
  • Design a pair of ear defenders selecting the most appropriate materials

This half term we will be learning:
  • To introduce the If/else statement and use it in a program.
  • To create a variable.
  • To create a program with a character that repeats actions
  • To make timers and counting machines using variables to print a new number 
  • To know what decomposition and abstraction are in computer science​
To support your child at home you could:​
  • Complete any 2Dos set by your teacher
  • Use Purple Mash to improve your coding skills

Art and Design

This half term we will be learning:
  • To complete Elizabethan miniature portraits inspired by Nicholas Hilliard 
  • Look at proportion
  • Look at the correct face guidelines - to enable the correct placement of features on the face

To support your child at home you could:
  • Use mirrors to complete self portraits
  • Look at a variety of different faces paying attention to the shapes and features
  • Practise sketching techniques

Music

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Composing our own music using percussion instruments and singing.
  • Add layers of sound to our compositions.
  • Reflect on and evaluate our own compositions.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Listen to a range of music that contains the flute.
  • Practise blowing sounds over the top of a glass bottle.​
  • Practise clapping or dancing to a steady beat.



RE

This half term we will be learning to: 
  • Explore Buddhism
  • Key questions we will study: Is it possible for everyone to be happy?
  • Look at the story 'The Life of The Buddha'

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Discuss happiness and what they means to you
  • Practise meditation techniques 
  • Visit the Peace Pagoda in Willen Lake

Jigsaw (PSHE)

Our next Jigsaw unit is 'Celebrating Difference'. We will be:
  • Discussing first impressions
  • Understand who is in my school community, the roles they play and how I fit
  • Understand how democracy works through the school council
  • understand that my actions affect myself and others; I care about other people’s feelings and try to empathise with them
​

PE


This term, some children will be swimming to improve water confidence and swimming distances. You will have received a letter about this if your child is included in this term's swimming unit. Swimming is on Friday afternoons this term.
All children in year 4 will continue to take part in Kit's Academy PE sessions on a Monday morning.
Children who are not attending swimming will be doing outdoor PE on a Friday afternoon and will be learning about invasion games

To support your child at home you could:
  • Check in regularly with your child to discuss any concerns or worries they may have.
  • Make it known to them that you are there to listen and answer questions they may have.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Take them to a local swimming pool (we will be going to Stantonbury) and talk to them about water safety.
  • Ensure that your child can get dried by themselves and dressed after swimming, and that they know how to dry their own hair with a towel.
  • Practise throwing and catching skills with balls.
  • Watch different ball games online and discuss the rules. Try some out for yourselves.
