Design and Technology at Great Linford Primary SchoolIntent The National Curriculum is used to underpin our Design and Technology curriculum, which is taught in discrete blocks within each year group. Our curriculum progression is focused on developing skills that allow our pupils to be creative in their thinking, manipulate essential tools and materials, and to evaluate the form and function of items in everyday use and meals that are nutritious. Through the cycle of design, making and evaluation the pupils understand how ideas are tested and refined. The progression documents detail the core language of design and technology that pupils will learn as they progress through the curriculum. Implementation Class teachers use the progression documents and Kapow to underpin their planning. Teachers plan and teach three blocks of Design and Technology across the year that have been specifically chosen to link to class topics and allow sufficient curriculum time to develop the balance of creative thinking, making and evaluating. Teachers are supported in their own professional development of Design technology by using Kapow and leaders. Teachers provide feedback to the pupils based on accuracy of their applied skills, offering support and guidance on what is needed to improve further. Teachers routinely check whether pupils are developing the core knowledge through targeted questioning. Impact Class teachers are expected to make routine formative assessment of the development of skills against the progression document. This happens both within lessons and between lessons. Their assessments inform the way in which they provide feedback and/or adapt their teaching to ensure that the identified skills develop. Teachers use pre and post assessments to assess disciplinary and substantive knowledge. Teachers are expected to consult with leaders where there is any uncertainty in making a judgement. |
Cooking and nutrition at Great Linford Primary School
At Great Linford Primary School, we are passionate about teaching cookery skills and about nutrition. In our lessons, the children learn vital life skills which allows them to be safe and reduce any risks when using equipment or cooking. Children explore nutrition through designing, making and evaluating. Children are able to explore how and where food is grown, looking closely at seasonality. Through structured theory and practical lessons, they develop a progression of cookery skills focused around the importance of a balanced diet.

Jam sandwiches
Year 1 have been making jam sandwiches for the King. They started by exploring what sandwiches we could design. After deciding on a jam sandwich, they considered the steps they would need to follow to be successful. After writing a class set of instructions, the children then made their sandwiches using the steps. They discovered how to spread jam carefully on the bread so the bread did not tear. After they had made their sandwiches, the children had time to evaluate their creations. They were able to suggest what went well and what they would do differently next time. |
