STEM Family Challenge

Picture
All children are curious about the world around them and how things work. GLPS STEM Family Challenges are monthly events designed to encourage families to work through practical, hands-on activities. Each challenge will link to a real life situation where STEM skills are important to develop a passion for STEM and raise awareness of future careers.

Each challenge has a number of steps to work through. We encourage children to think creatively about how they present these steps such as written reports, photographs, presentation slides, artistic designs, or a mixture! Whether you successfully finish the challenge or just have fun trying, we hope that all families send their projects in to the school so all your teamwork and achievements can be celebrated.

Find all the information you need on the challenge sheet, along with a challenge video, below for each month. Will you complete the challenge? Good luck!

EASTER - Egg Drop

Click below to download the challenge sheet for Easter's "Egg Drop" Family STEM Challenge. Inspired by Nasa's
Perseverance Rover landing on Mars this year, we are challenging you to design a way to drop an egg without breaking it. This challenge sheet contains information on the steps you can follow in your investigation, how to enter your project, a context for how these skills could be used in real life careers, and links to other sources of information explaining the science behind the challenge.
Challenge ends... 30th April.

Well done to everyone who entered the February Family STEM Challenge 'Eco Racing'. We loved seeing all the hard work and research that went into understanding cars. We had a mixture of elastic band and magnet powered cars!

With our growing understanding of climate change and the impact cars have in this, it is fantastic to see our engineers of the future considering other methods of propelling cars. We hope you enjoy this video celebrating some of the great work that was sent in.

JANUARY - Sink or Swim

Click below to download the challenge sheet for January's "Swink or Swim" Family STEM Challenge. This challenge sheet contains information on the steps you can follow in your investigation, how to enter your project, a context for how these skills could be used in real life careers, and links to other sources of information explaining the science behind the challenge. Challenge ends... 31st January.

Well done to everyone who entered the January Family STEM Challenge 'Sink or Swim'. We loved seeing all your creative designs for boats and the investigations that took place. Some of you looked at displaced water, some looked at what materials absorbed water, and some even tried to change the density of liquids by adding sugar!

Not only do we have some fantastic engineers of the future, but there are definitely some scientists in the making among us. We hope you enjoy this video celebrating some of the great work that was sent in.
