 Geography - Where does our food come from?

This half term we will be learning to:
  • ​Identify that food grows in different biomes and explain why.
  • Explain which foods have the most significant negative impact on the environment.
  • Describe the intentions around trading responsibly.
  • Describe the journey of a cocoa bean.
  • Collect data through interview processes.
  • Discuss trends in data collected.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning


To support your child at home you could:
  • Look at food packaging and look up on a map where your food has travelled from.
  • Visit a local farmer's market and ask them about their produce.

Writing

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Write a biography.
  • Use brackets in our writing.
  • Extend the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions.​​

Maths

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Convert between pounds and pence.
  • Calculate with money.
  • Tell the the time to quarter past and half past.
  • Convert between 12 and 24 hour clock.
  • Compare and order angles.
  • Identify different types of triangles and quadrilaterals.
  • Interpret line graphs
  • Plot and translate co-ordinates on a grid.

Computing: Website Design

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Use tabs on Google sites
  • Plan a design layout for a website
  • Create a website with useful information.

  • Look at different websites and their features.
  • Use Google sites to practise making a website at home.

Science

This half term we will be working scientifically by:​

  • Comparing the flow of different liquids.
  • Investigating liquids in different ways.
  • Carrying out fair tests.
  • ​Considering anomalies and possible reasons for them within our data.
This unit links together the science learning we have covered across the whole of year 4.

To support your child at home you could:
  • ​​Carry out your own fair tests at home.
  • Practise measuring in different ways using a range of measuring apparatus.

Design Technology: Textiles


 This half term we will be learning to:
  • Identify the benefits and features of a range of fastening types.
  • Write design criteria and design a book sleeve that fits the criteria.
  • Sew using a range of different stitches.
  • Sew our own book sleeve with a chosen fastening.

  • Practise threading a needle.
  • Practise sewing.
  • Practise sewing on a button.

Music - Hanami + Haiku

This half term we will be learning to: 
  • Suggest suitable words to describe their time outdoors, changing the sounds of their words to match their meanings.
  • Recognise, name and describe the effect of the interrelated dimensions of music.
  • Select instruments and sounds which match their vocabulary.
  • Work as a group to create a piece of music.
  • Perform a piece of music as part of a group.

  • Make your own musical instruments from items around the home.
  • Listen to some soundscapes on BBC website.
  • Have a go at creating some of your own 'sound effects'.
  • Go for a walk in your local area and listen to the sounds around you and create your own picture to show your 'soundscape'.

PE on a Tuesday - Athletics

  • Throw using a variety of techniques.
  • Adjust our running paces to suit different distance events.
  • Jump using a variety of techniques.

  • Name and say 10 Olympic sports
  • Learn simple vocabulary to explain sports we do
  • Learn to write a phrase describing an athlete by their sport.

  • Watching a video in French with subtitles on to see common words and their spellings. 
  • Orally rehearse simple sentences in French.
