This Half Term

Project: Under the Sea

Picture
This half term we will be learning to:
  • Name and locate the world’s 5 oceans.
  • Use basic physical geographical vocabulary such as: beach, cliff, sea, coast, ocean.
  • Use basic human geographical vocabulary.
  • Use a map.
  • To make observations from pictures and videos about the features of costal areas.
  • Identify the human impact on the oceans environment

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Look at a map and identify the 5 oceans.
  • Talk to your child about animals that are found under the sea.
  • Research different plants that are found under the sea with your child.

Writing

Picture
This half term we will be learning to:
  • Write a fact file.
  • Leave finger spaces in between words.
  • Compose a sentence orally before writing it.
  • Use a capital letter for names and at the start of sentences.
  • Use question marks correctly.

Throughout each topic, we will be focussing on using our capital letters, full stops, using our phonic sounds to help our spellings and using simple sentence structures.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Write sentences using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
  • Practise common exception words.
  • Practise letter formation and recognition.​ 
  • Practise phonic sounds daily.​
  • Practise weekly spellings set on Google Classroom using Spelling Frame.

​This half term we will be learning to add and subtract within 20 which includes:
  • Adding by counting on.
  • Using our number bonds to 10 to help us with our fluency.
  • Learning fact families for addition and subtraction.
  • Comparing number sentences.
  • Exploring related facts and how addition and subtraction work alongside each other.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Practise counting forwards and backwards to 20.
  • Play board games that support your child’s fluency in addition and subtraction.
  • Continue number formation ensuring numbers are the correct way round.
  • Practise number bonds to 10, ensuring your child is fluent in these.

  • Identify and name a variety of animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
  • Identify and name common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
  • Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals.
  • Plan our own expedition to a cold place and investigate what we would need to take and explore why.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • ​Try and spot different animals in your local area.
  • Talk about any pets at home and if they are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores and what these mean.
  • Talk about travelling to the North Pole and what items would be necessary to take.

  • Recognise keys on a keyboard.
  • Type on a keyboard, including entering symbols and capital letters.
  • Change the font.
To support your child at home you could:
  • Practise logging on to a computer at home with your child.
  • Allow your child time to explore technology for their learning, such as numbots and spelling frame.
  • Talk with your child about staying safe on the internet and how to use technology in a safe way.


Art and Design

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Mix paint to create different shades and understand the colour wheel.
  • Make different types of line.
  • Create an abstract piece of work and understand what this means.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Research different materials and textiles.
  • Have a go at creating your own patterns using different materials.
  • Encourage your child to be creative and experiment with different patterns and colours.

Music

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Copy and repeat a simple singing melody.
  • Sing with confidence and expression.
  • Sing in unison and in canon.
  • Follow pictorial cues and hand cues for changes in pitch and tempo.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Practise tapping to a beat.
  • ​Practise singing well known songs.
  • Practise creating and repeating different melodies.

  • Remind your child to use our worry box or the people on their safe hand if they have a worry in school.
  • Talk to your children about celebration differences.
  • Engaging in a conversation with your child about differences but whilst ensuring we all treat each other with respect.
  • Talk to your child about their dreams and goals for the new year.

RE

Picture
This half term we will be:
  • ​learning to reflect on the key question: Was it always easy for Jesus to show friendship?
  • Understand what it means to be a good friend.
  • Exploring bible stories and what these show about Jesus' friendships.

Suggested activities to support learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Have a discussion with your child on respecting beliefs and religions.
  • Talk to your child about what it means to be a good friend.

PE

Picture
This half term we will be looking at dance. This will include learning to:
  • Explore moving words.
  • Performing a short motif based on a moving word.
  • Have a clear start and end to a dance.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Discuss the benefits of physical exercise and the effect that it has on our bodies.
  • Talk about the importance of keeping ourselves safe during physical activity.
  • Encourage to child to move around their space at home, using actions to link movements together.
