This Half Term

Project: Sustainability

This half term we will be learning:
  • About where our rubbish goes when it is chucked in the bin.
  • The significance of waste on our planet.
  • The process of recycling and what materials can be recycled.
  • To understand that we are all global citizens who have an impact on our planet.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Talk about recycling as a family and ensure you are recycling and reusing where possible.
  • Talk with your child about which materials can be chucked away.
  • Go on a litter pick in your local area.
  • Talk to your child about the impact of rubbish on our planet.

Writing

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Leave finger spaces between words.
  • Sequence a story using the key language of beginning, middle and end.
  • Use 'and' 'or' and 'but' to join our sentences together.
  • Write our own narrative based on our topic of sustainability.

Throughout each topic, we will be focussing on using our capital letters, full stops, using our phonic sounds to help our spellings and using simple sentence structures.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Write sentences using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
  • Practise common exception words.
  • Practise letter formation and recognition.​ 
  • Practise phonic sounds daily.​

  • Measuring using non-standard measurements such as cubes.
  • Comparing length and height.
  • Exploring mass, capacity and volume.

  • Practise measuring household items using a ruler.
  • Practise measuring ingredients when cooking.
  • Continue number formation ensuring numbers are the correct way round.
  • Practise number bonds to 10, ensuring your child is fluent in these.

Science- Holiday

  • Carry out simple tests to show how powerful the sun is.
  • Plan and prepare our own simple tests to answer our own questions.
  • Identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
  • Identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. 
  • Explore the human impact of seaside holidays.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • ​Encourage your child to wear sun protection when it is sunny.
  • Carry out your own experiment to show the impact of the sun.
  • Talk about different animals that you may find on a holiday.
  • Discuss what you may pack for a holiday and how this changes depending on where you are going.

Computing

  • Recognise keys on a keyboard.
  • Group data and put labels onto data.
  • Record Data.

  • Practise logging on to a computer at home with your child.
  • Allow your child time to explore technology for their learning, such as numbots and spelling frame.
  • Talk with your child about staying safe on the internet and how to use technology in a safe way.


Art and Design

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Make our own shades of green.
  • Make our own prints and use a variety of objects to print with.
  • Compare work by the same artist and use artist language to discuss these.
  • Draw around different shapes and understanding that these can overlap.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Have a go at mixing different colours of paint and experimenting with shades.
  • Practise cutting out magazines and newspapers to make an abstract collage.
  • Painting pictures and practising control of holding a paint brush.

Music

  • Use our hands and body to make music.
  • Play untuned instruments musically.
  • Understand the different between pulse and rhythm. 
  • Play simple rhythms on different instruments.

  • ​Practise singing well known songs.
  • Practise creating and repeating different melodies.

PE

This half term we will be looking at dance. This will include learning to:
  • Explore moving words.
  • Performing a short motif based on a moving word.
  • Have a clear start and end to a dance.

  • Discuss the benefits of physical exercise and the effect that it has on our bodies.
  • Talk about the importance of keeping ourselves safe during physical activity.
  • Encourage to child to move around their space at home, using actions to link movements together.
