Children come to school in PE kit on PE days. If your child cannot remove earrings themselves, please ensure they are not worn on PE days. We do go outside in cold weather. Please ensure your child has weather appropriate clothing.

This Half Term

Project: What is it like to live in Shanghai?

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Understand what human and physical features are. 
  • Identify features we see on a walk.
  • Explain the location of features using some directional language.
  • Name the continent we live in.
  • Use an atlas to locate the UK and China on a world map.
  • Use an atlas to locate Europe and Asia on a world map.
  • Identify China’s physical and human geography.
  • Sort physical and human features using photographs.
  • Identify physical and human features in images of Shanghai.
  • Compare Shanghai to their locality.
  • Identify similarities and differences between human and physical features.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Research what it is like in Shanghai.
  • Visit a local library and enjoy books about the UK and China.
  • Go on a local walk thinking about where we live. 
  • Create a map of your local area showing the human and physical features. 

Writing

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Leave finger spaces between words.
  • Sequence a story using the key language of beginning, middle and end.
  • Use 'and' 'or' and 'but' to join our sentences together.
  • Write our own narrative based on our topic of sustainability.
  • Use a variety of adjectives to describe. 
  • Use features of a letter. 

Throughout each topic, we will be focusing on using our capital letters, full stops, using our phonic sounds to help our spellings and using simple sentence structures.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Write sentences using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
  • Practise common exception words.
  • Practise letter formation and recognition.​ 
  • Practise phonic sounds daily.​
  • Practise weekly spellings in your home fluency book.

Maths


​This half term we will be:​​
  • Learning how to use a ruler.
  • Measuring using non-standard measurements such as cubes.
  • Comparing length and height.
  • Exploring mass, capacity and volume.
  • Measuring mass, capacity and volume.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Practise measuring household items using a ruler.
  • Practise measuring ingredients when cooking.
  • Continue number formation ensuring numbers are the correct way round.
  • Practise number bonds to 10, ensuring your child is fluent in these.

Science- Comparing Animals


​This half term we will be learning to:
  • Name and describe the physical features of a range of animals.
  • Sort animals into groups based on their similarities and differences.
  • Identify characteristics specific to mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
  • Recall the diets of carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • ​If you have toy animals at home, you could sort them by type or by diet. 
  • Choose your favourite animals and research information about your animal. 
  • Visit a local wildlife park.
  • Go on a bug hunt and list how many bugs you see. 

Computing

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Recognise cause and effect when pressing buttons on a Vex. 
  • Discuss and demonstrate how the Vex works.
  • Record video, ensuring everyone is in the shot.
  • Give several clear instructions in sequence.
  • Program a Vex to reach a destination.
  • Identify and correct mistakes in their programming.
To support your child at home you could:
  • Practise logging on to a computer at home with your child.
  • Allow your child time to explore technology for their learning, such as numbots and spelling frame.
  • Talk with your child about staying safe on the internet and how to use technology in a safe way.
  • Talk about how robots are used in the real world. 
  • Design a robot that could help with a job or task. 

Art, Design and Technology

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Follow design criteria to meet the needs of a user.
  • Make a stable structure.
  • Make functioning sails/blades that attach to the supporting structure.
  • Improve their windmill.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Have a go at making different shaped structures at home using different types of paper or card. 
  • Visit a local windmill. 
  • Research other objects that use axles.

Music and Performance

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Explain what pitch means.
  • Identify whether a note is higher or lower.
  • Create a pattern using two pitches.
  • Explain what tempo means.
  • Identify simple tempo changes in music.
  • Perform a pattern that gradually gets faster (accelerando).

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Practise tapping to a beat.
  • ​Practise singing well known songs.
  • Practise creating and repeating different melodies. 

RE

This half term we will be:
  • Exploring what Jesus taught us.
  • Exploring the parable of The Good Samaritan.
  • Exploring the parable of The Lost Son.
  • Understanding what we can learn from Jesus.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Have a discussion with your child on respecting beliefs and religions.
  • Discuss how we can be kind to others. 

​PSHE - Healthy Me

This half term we will be learning:
  • What it means to be healthy.
  • How we can keep our bodies healthy.
  • How we can keep our minds healthy.
  • To understand that some objects may harm our bodies if not used correctly. 

Suggested activities to support learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Remind your child to use our worry box or the people on their safe hand if they have a worry in school.
  • Talk to your child about keeping healthy.
  • Plan a healthy meal together.
  • Talk to your child about items that are dangerous such as cleaning products.

PE

This half term we will be looking at dance. This will include learning to:
  • Explore moving words.
  • Performing a short motif based on a moving word.
  • Have a clear start and end to a dance.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Discuss the benefits of physical exercise and the effect that it has on our bodies.
  • Talk about the importance of keeping ourselves safe during physical activity.
  • Encourage to child to move around their space at home, using actions to link movements together.
