This Half Term

 Project - Rainforests

This half term we will be learning to:
  • ​Identify where in the world rainforests are located.
  • Understand how people live in the rainforest.
  • Understand how rainforests are changing and why.
  • Understand how local woodland is used.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning


To support your child at home you could:
  • Create your own 'fact file' about a rainforest
  • Visit the 'Living Rainforest' in Berkshire
  • Visit a local woodland and find out about how it is used.

Writing

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Write a newspaper report
  • Use reported speech
  • Extend the range of sentences we use with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions
  • Write Haiku poems.

Maths

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Count beyond 1 in fractions
  • Order, compare and convert between mixed and improper fractions.
  • Identify equivalent fractions on a numberline.
  • Add and subtract fractions.
  • Subtract a fraction from a whole number.

Computing

Suggested Activities to Support Learning
This half term we will be learning to:
  • ​Use decomposition to solve a problem.
  • Understand that computational thinking has 4 strands.
  • Create an algorithm for a specific purpose.
  • Combine computational thinking skills to solve a problem.
To support your child at home you could:

  • Spend time learning some of the buttons on Scratch.
  • Look at creations from other users on Scratch and take a look at their code to see how it works.

Science

This half term we will be working scientifically by:
  • ​​Identify solids, liquids and gases using their properties.
  • Describe melting, freezing, condensing and evaporating. 
  • Describe the different stages of the water cycle. 
  • Describe how temperature affects the rate of evaporation and therefore the water cycle.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • ​​Carry out investigations involving heating and evaporation.
  • Carry out investigations involving cooling and freezing.

Art and Design


 This half term we will be learning to:
  • Create several pencil tones when shading and create a simple 3D effect.
  • Explore the effect of holding a pencil in different ways and applying different pressures.
  • Use charcoal and rubber to show areas of light and dark in their drawings.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the relative size of the objects they draw.
  • Show some awareness of how to create contrast by including areas with more and less marks.
  • Create an interesting finished drawing based on their original composition, including detail such as contrast and pattern.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Take a sketchbook out and walk to a local area and do a 'live sketch'
  • Share a drawing project as a family, drawing items from the home and your home
  • Take a virtual visit to 'The National Gallery'

Music

This half term we will be learning to: 
  • Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accracy, fluency, control and expression
  • Improvise and compose music for a range of purpose using the inter-related dimensions of music
  • Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory​

  • Talk about what songs are special to them and why
  • Make your own musical instruments from items around the home.
  • Listen to some soundscapes on BBC
  • Have a go at creating some of your own 'sound effects'
  • Go for a walk in your local area and listen to the sounds around you and create your own picture to show your 'soundscape'

PE


 
Indoor PE:  Dance
This half term we will be learning to:
  • ​Demonstrate stillness by holding a position with control.
  • March in time with the music and in unison with a group.
  • Create a motif for a chorus with a particular theme.
  • Use gesture and facial expression within a dance.
  • Create transitions between dance phases.
  • Carry out a performance, staying in character.

​Outdoor PE:  Cricket
This half term we will be learning to:
  • Retrieve a ball and return it to the wicket.
  • Hit a drop feed ball with a cricket bat.
  • Choose the correct throw for different distances.
  • Bowl a ball underarm at a wicket.
  • Demonstrate a correct technique when close catching and deep field catching.
  • Be able to follow the rules of a cricket game.

  • Discuss the benefits of physical exercise and the effect that it has on our bodies

RE
