This Half Term

Project: The Victorians

Picture
This half term we will be :
  • Finding out about what life was like for children during the Victorian era.
  • Finding out about changes that happened in cities during the Industrial Revolution.
  • Finding out about child labour and education during the Victorian era.
  • Comparing life during this time period to our lives today.
  • Comparing life in cities to life in villages during the Victorian era.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Watch movies set during this time period e.g. Oliver Twist
  • Research inventions from this time period.
  • Look at photographs taken during this time period.

Writing (Based on Street Child by Berlie Doherty)

To support your child at home you could:
  • Read regularly and discuss new vocabulary and punctuation.
  • Use our google classroom page to see what new vocabulary we will be learning in class.
  • Visit https://www.vocabularyninja.co.uk/ and use their word of the day resources to expand your vocabulary.
  • While it would be helpful for your child to read chapters for a second time in school, please discourage your child from reading this text further than we have done in class. This is so that we can work on prediction and inference skills in class.

  • Divide up to 4 digits by 1 digit using a formal written method.
  • Identify equivalent fractions.
  • Understand fractions greater than one.
  • Convert between improper and mixed fractions.
  • Compare and order fractions.
  • Add and subtract fractions.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Continue to practise times tables using TT Rockstars (log ins are inside reading records)
  • Practise on Numbots (using your TTRockstars password) to become very quick with your addition and subtraction skills.
  • Play maths games online.

Science - Properties of Materials

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Compare and group together materials based on their properties.
  • Identify thermal and electrical conductors.
  • Describe how to recover a substance from a solution.
  • Use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to be able to separate a mixture.
  • Understand which changes are reversible and which are irreversible.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could: ​
  • Have a go at carrying out your own experiments at home to test properties of materials.
  • Practise using key vocabulary words to describe properties e.g. flexible, rigid, transparent, magnetic, opaque.

Computing

  • Use spreadsheets to record information.
  • Learn about the different functions of spreadsheets.
  • Use a spreadsheet to plan an event.
To support your child at home you could: ​
  • Discuss how you might use spreadsheets in your life.
  • Show your child how to access Excel or Google Sheets on your home computer and how it can be used.
  • Create a spreadsheet at home for a particular purpose e.g. recording how much reading they have done, recording pocket money savings or housework etc.
 

Art and Design

This half term we will be:
  • Looking at artwork and prints by William Morris
  • Considering how the invention of the camera changed art
  • Experimenting with complementing colours.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:​
  • ​​Find some of the earliest photographs from the invention of the camera.
  • Compare 'posed' photographs to 'candid' photographs and discuss the effects of each of these styles.
  • Find out about more artists from this time period.

Music

This half term we will be:
  • Using tuned and untuned percussion instruments to play music.
  • Composing our own songs.
  • Learning how to follow a beat.
  • Learning how to play an instrument as part of a group.

  • Watch videos of chime bars being played.
  • Buy a musical instrument to use at home.

PSHE

This half term in our Jigsaw lessons we will be learning about 'Dreams and Goals'.
We will be:
  • Identifying dreams and goals we have for the future.
  • Learning what it takes to achieve these dreams and goals.
  • Learning about different career choices and how much people earn in these jobs.
  • Identify what motivates us to work towards our goals.
  • Understand how the dreams and goals of someone from another culture may differ to my own.
  • Learn how to support others with meeting their goals.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Talk about dreams or goals you had at their age.
  • Discuss with them how you chose a specific career path and what you had to do to achieve this.
  • Set small achievable goals that could be achieved over this half term that would help them on their path towards their bigger goals.

RE

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Discuss different religions.​
  • Talk about beliefs that you or your family hold.

PE

Picture
Our outdoor PE lessons take place on a Tuesday afternoon. During our outdoor PE sessions, we will be using our football skills to create our own invasion games.

Miss Scott's class have their indoor PE sessions on a Monday afternoon, and Mrs Humphris' class have their indoor PE sessions on a Wednesday afternoon. During our indoor PE sessions, we will be developing a dance sequence linked to the Haka.

PE kits should be worn to school on our PE days. Please note that we do try to continue with our PE sessions even when the weather is very cold. We also currently have all windows open during the day for better ventilation so please make sure you wear weather-appropriate PE attire (warm jumpers, jogging bottoms) as well as suitable trainers for the outdoor PE sessions.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Choose a sport to take part in at home.
  • Find sporting videos to watch online.
  • Create your own invasion games at home.
  • Watch videos of the Haka.

French

In our French lessons we will be learning to:
