Make sure your child comes into school wearing a PE kit suitable for outdoor PE on both days so that they can stay warm.

Please make sure earrings are removed on PE days.

This Half Term

 Project - Our Heroes

This half term we will be:
  • Learning about the NHS and how it was formed.
  • Exploring how doctors and nurses help us overcome challenges.
  • Learning how nursing has changed over time. 
  • Looking at key figures such as: Florence Nightingale and Mary Secole.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Interview a doctor or nurse.
  • Go to the local library to find out more about the NHS.
  • Research Florence Nightingale.

Writing

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Create our own non-chronological reports.
  • Use commas in a list.
  • Create our own portal story.
  • Use paragraphs to structure our writing.
  • Use titles and subheadings.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Create your own non chronological report about your own interest.
  • Write a letter to a doctor or nurse.
  • Read daily at home.
  • Practice our spellings on spelling frame. See the link below

Maths

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems. 
  • Use fact families to help solve addition and subtraction. 
  • Add using the column method. 
  • Use exchanging to solve subtraction problems that cross 10.
  • Recognise the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. 
  • Solve problems using different models and representations.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Explore addition and subtraction in the world such as when you are out shopping. 
  • Practice addition and subtraction facts. 
  • Explore different fact families at home.

Computing

To support your child at home you could:
  • Talk about how we use the internet safely.
  • Go on a walk and take photographs as a family. 
  • Look at different family photographs. 
This half term we will be learning to:
  • Explore digital photography.
  • Explore what makes a good photograph.
  • Use computer software to change photographs. 
  • Explain how to improve a photograph. 

Science - Microhabitats

This half term we will be working scientifically by:
  • Identify and name a variety of plants and animals.
  • Describe microhabitats and their conditions.
  • Describe how microhabitats provide for the basic needs of animals and plants.
  • Group minibeasts and create simple classification keys.
  • Gather and record data and use it to answer questions.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

​To support your child at home you could:​
  • Try your own mini beast hunt.
  • Research different types of microhabitats.
  • Create your own classification key about mini beasts you can find in your garden or a park.

Design and Technology

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Identify man-made and natural structures.
  • Identify stable and unstable structural shapes.
  • Produce a model that supports a teddy, using the appropriate materials and construction techniques.
  • Explain how they made their model strong, stiff and stable.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Have a look at identify man made and natural structures in your local area.
  • Look at different items of furniture at home and discuss why they have been made in that way to make them stable.

Music - Traditional Western Stories

 This half term we will be learning to:
  • Make plausible descriptions of  music.
  • Identify a few instruments and the sounds of different sections of the orchestra.
  • Explain what is happening in the music using language relating to emotion.
  • Create a piece of music with some appropriate tempo, dynamic and timbre changes.
  • Suggest appropriate musical timbres for  characters and tempo changes for actions.
  • Perform confidently using appropriate instrumental sounds.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Watch Music Roadshow Videos on our Music Curriculum Page
  • Watch 'Musical Storyland' using the link.
  • Watch 'George and the Orchestra
  • Name different instruments and their families; woodwind, percussion, strings, brass.
  • Go to a Music Shop to see some instruments.
  • Find a Music Concert to go and see.

PE

This half term we will be learning how to:
  • Create our own gymnastic routines. 
  • Use tactics in team games. 
NB: Please ensure that children have a full PE kit in school at all times. Please also ensure that the children have appropriate clothing in case of cold or inclement weather. If you are unsure or have any questions please feel free to ask a member of the year 2 team.

  • Discuss the benefits of physical exercise and the effect that it has on our bodies.
  • Create your own gymnastic routine with rolls and jumps.

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Accept that everyone is different.
  • Understand what a stereotype is.
  • Know what to do if I or someone else is being bullied.
  • Understand that differences make us feel special and unique.
To support your child at home you could:
  • ​Discuss how we are different and how that makes us feel.
  • Talk about the worry box and protective hands..
  • Create your own worry box/ protective hands at home. 

RE - Christianity

Suggested activities to support learning
Our key question this half term is:
  • Why do Christians believe God gave Jesus to the world?
We will be learning to:
  • Retell the Christmas story.
  • Explore how Christians prepare for Christmas.
  • Explore how I show love to the world. 
To support your child at home you could:
  • Visit a local church.
  • Talk to a Christian and ask them how they prepare for Christmas. 
  • Create your own story puppets to retell the Christmas story.
