Project - Post-War Britain

 This half term we will be learning to:
  • Explore what life was like after the end of World War Two.
  • Describe the social, ethnic, cultural diversity of post-war Britain.
  • Research historical information about the formation of the NHS.
  • Investigate how the Windrush generation influenced British life.
  • Present and consider the reliability of information.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

Picture
To support your child at home you could:
  • Research the effect of World War Two on Britain after the war.
  • Ask family members about their memories of how life in Britain has changed during their lifetime.
  • Visit museums to look at different sources and consider whether it is reliable or not based on who and when it was created.

Writing - Coming To England

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Write recounts to convey details of events.
  • Use parenthesis to add additional information.
  • Write a letter using emotive language in first person.
  •  Use literary techniques to engage a reader.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Read age appropriate stories and information about World War Two and Britain after the war ended.
  • Think about stories you have read - how does the writer engage you? What techniques do they use?
  • Diary entries and autobiographies from people who have moved from other countries, with different cultures, to Britain.
  • Practise recounts about trips you go on with your family. Consider what important information and facts you need to include.

  • Investigate fractions by looking at food items at home or in shops (for example chocolate bars and cakes).
  • Practise simple fraction calculations by drawing models.

  • Classify living things in a range of different ways.
  • Compare skeletal systems of living things, understanding differences between exoskeletons, endoskeletons and vertebrates.
  • Identify the importance of fungi during decomposition.
  • Take measurements using scientific equipment.

  • Record observational notes on the animals and plants growing in your garden or in the local area where you live. 
  • Construct your own set of questions to help classify a group of items (from books to Lego blocks!)

Computing

  • Decomposing a program into an algorithm.
  • Writing increasingly complex algorithms for a purpose.
  • Debugging quickly and effectively to make a program more efficient.
  • Remixing existing code to explore a problem.
  • Using and adapting nested loops.
  • Programming using the language Python.
  • Changing a program to personalise it.
  • Evaluating code to understand its purpose.
  • Using logical thinking to explore software independently, iterating ideas and testing continuously.

Design & Technology - Automata Toys

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Experimenting with a range of cams, creating a design for an automata toy based on a choice of cam to create a desired movement.
  • Understanding how linkages change the direction of a force.
  • Making things move at the same time.
  • Understanding and drawing cross-sectional diagrams to show the inner-workings of my design.
  • Measuring, marking and checking the accuracy of the jelutong and dowel pieces required.
  • Measuring, marking and cutting components accurately using a ruler and scissors.
  • Assembling components accurately to make a stable frame.
  • Understanding that for the frame to function effectively the components must be cut accurately and the joints of the frame secured at right angles.
  • Selecting appropriate materials based on the materials being joined and the speed at which the glue needs to dry/set.
  • Evaluating the work of others and receiving feedback on own work.
  • Applying points of improvement to their toys.
  • Describing changes they would make/do if they were to do the project again.

  • Compose musical pieces using repeated patterns on electronic devices.
  • Rehearse and perform music composed within a group. 
  • Interpret musical pieces through movements.
  • Learning festive music and performing carols in front of an audience.

  • Practise composing music using various sources found in the home. 
  • Listen to current music and write/draw about how it makes you feel. 
  • Listen to post-war music and look for the influence of Caribbean culture on musical tastes in Britain at that time.

RE

This half term we will be learning to:​
  • Develop understanding of concepts and mastery of skills to make sense of religion and belief. 
  • ​Explore the ways a Muslim might try to lead a good life.
  • Describe how people try to lead respectful lives in relation to religious beliefs.
  • Identify the positives of leading a good life and explain what this might look like.

PSHE
  • Understand some ways that difference can be a source of conflict in people's lives.
  • Think about people experiencing conflict in their lives because they are different.. 
  • Show empathy with people in situations where their difference is a source of conflict or a cause for celebration.

PE

Picture
PE will be on Monday PM for all of Year 6. Then, Friday PM for Miss Hannigan's class and Thursday PM for Mr Silvester's class.
Sports: Gymnastics and Tag Rugby
Skills taught include: 
  • Pass the ball with control and tackle showing consistent control and use space effectively to enable dodging tackles.
  • Play effectively in a game situation.
  • Explore symmetrical body shapes and movements individually and as part of a pair.

French (MFL): Language Angels

 This half term we will be learning to:
  • Name common verbs in French.
  • Spell common verbs in French and match the spellings to images.
  • Describe in French activities or sports I can do.
  • Say which fruits I like and which I do not like.
  • Ask a question in French to establish someone's food preferences.

  • Throw a ball against a wall to develop hand-eye co-ordination.
  • Watch rugby matches from the Six Nations.
  • Test how long you can run for without stopping. Develop stamina by trying to run for longer every weekend.
