Project - The Blitz

 This half term we will be learning to:
  • Explore what life was like during World War Two.
  • Understand why the conflict began. 
  • Research historical information about the Allies and Axis powers.
  • Examine historical artifacts.
  • Present and consider the reliability of information.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

Picture
To support your child at home you could:
  • Research the effect of World War Two on children, particularly concerning evacuation.
  • Ask family members about their memories of the war or about stories that they have been told.
  • Visit museums to look at different sources and consider whether it is reliable or not based on who and when it was created.

This half term we will be learning to:
  • Write stories using direct and reported speech.
  • Use parenthesis to add additional information.
  • Write a character description using expanded noun phrases.
  •  Use literary techniques to build tension within narratives.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Read age appropriate stories and information about World War Two.
  • Think about stories you have read- how does the writer engage you? What techniques do they use?
  • Read evidence from historical artefacts such as ration books-has the way we use language changed over time? In what way?
  • Practise writing stories which convey emotion and make the reader feel happy or sorry for a character.

  • Understand the place value in a number up to ten million. 
  • Calculate the answer to number sentences using the four operations.
  • Ensure that we are confident with times tables up to 12x12.
  • Identify and use greater than and less than signs to compare and order numbers.

To support your child at home you could:
  • Investigate place value via comparing numbers in real life scenarios, for example, when out shopping.
  • Practise simple calculations using column methods.
  • Practise your times tables! Focus on 7s, 8s and 12s, recalling multiplication and division facts.

  • Label the different parts of the circulatory system. 
  • Understand the function of the circulatory system.
  • Recognise the role of the muscular and skeletal system and how they work together. 
  • Understand the link between exercise and maintaining a healthy body and mind. 

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

To support your child at home you could:
  • Monitor the effects of exercise on the body by recording your heart rate before and after exercise to see the impact. 
  • Construct your own model of a human skeleton. 
  • Create a leaflet advertising the benefits of keeping your body healthy. 

Computing

  • Understand what coding and debugging means.
  • Use coding to solve problems.
  • Use different functions within lines of code.

To support your child at home you could:​
  • Map out a route around your house and create lines of directions or instructions to guide someone along the route safely.  Will anyone trust your directions enough to try it with their eyes closed?
  • Remember to keep safe when online!

  • Create silhouettes based on a city scene during World War Two. 
  • Understand the effect created by using oil pastels. 
  • Look at colour wheels to differentiate between primary and secondary colours.

  • Look at cityscapes during different time periods, how have they changed?
  • Think about an effective way to use colours and blend them together. 
  • Create your own 3D model of a city during World War Two. 

Music

  • Compose musical pieces using repeated patterns on electronic devices.
  • Rehearse and perform music composed within a group. 
  • Interpret musical pieces through movements.

  • Practise composing music using various sources found in the home. 
  • Listen to current music and write/draw about how it makes you feel. 
  • Listen to war time music to link to our World War Two project.

RE

  • Develop understanding of concepts and mastery of skills to make sense of religion and belief. 
  • ​Explore the ways a Muslim might try to lead a good life.
  • Describe how people try to lead respectful lives in relation to religious beliefs.
  • Identify the positives of leading a good life and explain what this might look like.

PSHE
  • Understand how dreams and goals can shape the outlook we have on life. 
  • Think about the rights of a child and how that is applicable today. 
  • Understand that actions can have rewards and consequences and recognise the difference between these.

  • Ask family members about their own faith and how this plays a part in their lives.
  • Research what Akhirah means and why this is important to Muslims when considering how to lead a good life.

  • Discuss how to make good choices during certain situations which can lead to a positive outcome.

PE

Picture
PE will be on Monday PM for all of Year 6. Then, Thursday PM for Mr Silvester's  class and Friday  PM for Miss Hannigan's class.
Sports: Dance & Hockey
Skills taught include: 
  • Pass the ball with control and can dribble, shoot and tackle showing consistent control and use space effectively.
  • Play effectively in a game situation.

French (MFL): Language Angels

 This half term we will be learning to:
  • Name common verbs in French.
  • Spell common verbs in French and match the spellings to images.
  • Describe in French activities or sports I can do.
  • Say which fruits I like and which I do not like.
  • Ask a question in French to establish someone's food preferences.

Suggested Activities to Support Learning

  • Hit a ball against a wall with a variety of bats or racquets showing control.
  • Watch hockey matches from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
  • Test how long you can run for without stopping. Develop stamina by trying to run for longer every weekend.

  • Watching a video in French with subtitles on to see common words and their spellings. 
  • Orally rehearse simple sentences in French.
