Let's read!
The reading programme of study at Great Linford Primary School is founded on the passion of teachers to ensure that all children develop a lifelong love of reading. We encourage this using engaging social reading environments and daily, whole class, reading sessions. Reading drives our curriculum and creates strong links with all areas of study using a range of engaging books and texts.
We believe that home school communication is key and promote the importance of regular reading at home, inspiring children with our reading challenge. We promote and instill a love of reading via the use of novels and provide the opportunity for each child to have their own book to read along with the class. This leads to fantastic development of vocabulary, comprehension and the understanding that reading is a life- long skill that should be cherished.

Our core class texts
Due to our belief that reading should drive the curriculum, every half termly project is linked to a core text. The text is read individually and as a whole class during whole class reading and English lessons. Take a look at our current core texts!
Reading in EYFS
In Early Years, the children are provided with opportunities to read throughout the day whilst they are accessing their continuous provision and adult led activities. We believe that the first year of primary school is a crucial time to develop every child's knowledge of phonics sounds, but also to nurture a love of handling, reading and understanding books. All children take part in whole class story time twice a day and core texts, linked to projects, are explored through text maps and story telling.
Reading in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two
Rafferty- Year 1
The Queen's Hat by Steve Antony Year 1 have been enjoying learning all about London during their topic, 'The Adventures of Queen and Bear'. When reading their text as a class, they have been taken on a journey around London, developing knowledge of geographical landmarks in the capital city. |
Olivia- Year 2
The Unstoppable Maggie McGee by Juliet Bell As part of their 'Our Heroes' topic, Year 2 have been learning all about how we can achieve our dreams by overcoming our challenges. Olivia loved the imaginative illustrations and it has inspired many children to strive for a career in helping others. |
Stefan- Year 3
The Last Polar Bears by Harry Horse Year 3 have enjoyed reading their text as part of their topic 'A Journey of Endurance'. They have discussed challenges polar bear habitats face in modern times and are enjoying how the text reminds us to take care of ourselves, others and our environment. |
Harlie- Year 4
Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo As part of their project, 'The Anglo-Saxons', Year 4 have been enjoying reading an epic poem- Beowulf. The Prince of Geats displays great courage and determination in order to defeat the monster. |
Alex and Samuel- Year 5
Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick Year 5 have been reading Floodland as part of their project 'Natural Disasters'. They have been enjoying the dramatic aspect of the story and linking it to natural disasters such as flooding. Zoe's struggle links strongly to our ROOTS and and is inspiring throughout. |
Sofia- Year 6
Coming to England by Floella Benjamin Sofia is enjoying the Year 6 core text because it provides such a realistic comparison between life in England and Trinidad during post-war Britain. It is an inspiring tale of overcoming challenges and links brilliantly to our school ROOTS and values. |
We all love to read... here are some of our favourites!
At Great Linford Primary School, all adults have a passion for reading and love to spend time reading and talking about their own favourite books. Take a look, are there any that you would like to try?
Miss Green - Y6The Twits is my favourite book because it is funny and I love reading about the different ways that Mr and Mrs Twit try to get one over on one another!
I enjoyed it when I was a child so it brings back lovely memories of reading with my family. |
Miss Parish- Y6 Matilda is my favourite book to read because it is a story about a child who shows resilience and courage. She shows true bravery and perseverance in very difficult circumstances. In addition to this, the story is also incredibly funny and makes me burst with laughter every time I read it.
|
Mrs Humphris - Y5 I love this book because I really enjoy reading about the adventures of a young kitten discovering the joys of the wider world! It shows real determination and helps us to overcome our challenges.
|
Miss Scott- Y5I really love this book because it has lots of brilliant facts about life on the International Space Station. Did you know that space smells like BBQs? This book has ignited a passion for space; one which my class have also developed.

Miss Creed- Y4I enjoy this book as I love the fact it follows a journey. The story line is great with a focus on the countryside. The book contains many poems which run alongside it; the illustration is fantastic. A lovely read!
|
Mr Rowlands- Y4 From the moment I first heard the story in Year 5 (thank you Mrs Guest) I have wanted to share it with every class that I teach. If you don't shed a tear for William Beach then you have a heart of stone!
|
Miss Kerrigan - Deputy HeadI love the Harry Potter stories! I have read them all and listened to them all again as audio books. I think we can learn a lot from the characters JK Rowling has created - the characters stand up for what they believe in and succeed through hard work and determination as a team.
|
Mrs Hall- Y3I love George's Marvellous Medicine because I really enjoy reading stories about characters who overcome a challenge! My class love listening to it, particularly the funny parts.

Are you up for a challenge?
At Great Linford Primary School, each class runs their own reading challenge throughout the year. In each classroom, you will find a reading challenge display in which every child has their own 'character', from astronauts to racing cars! Each child is expected to read every night at home and have their reading record signed. They are then able to move their character along the race and, if they reach the end meaning that they have read every night, they will receive a golden ticket and go into the half termly prize draw!
World Book Week 2020
We had a fantastic time this year during World Book Week and were able to take part in many different activities, such as designing book tokens, paired reading and drop everything and read. The most enjoyable part of the week was World Book Day itself where we saw lots of different book characters come to life as we all came to school dressed up! We also had the chance to read with children from different year groups which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Books at bedtime 2020
This year we had a great turnout for our annual books at bedtime event, lots of children attended to listen to stories and enjoy reading with their families. We also had the opportunity to be creative whilst making characters from clay paper plates! Many children from Year 5 and 6 also enjoyed the spooky story session in the restricted area.
Design a cupcake competition 2020
We had a fantastic opportunity to be creative this year with a brilliant competition to design a cupcake with a reading related theme. We saw lots of innovative entries and it was very difficult to choose the winner, however we decided on Ileya and Theo. Well done to our winners, we are looking forward to our next competition!
